Boise State Nursing Professors, Students Win 2001-02 Department Awards

Four faculty members recently received awards from the Boise State University department of nursing for their professional achievements and contributions to the department during the 2001-02 academic year. In addition, several nursing students received awards from the department.

Professors Margaret “Marty” Downey (Service Award), Mary Hereford (Teaching Award), Jan Satterwhite (Achievement Award) and Pam Gehrke (Scholarly Activities Award) were the honored faculty members.

Downey, who has been employed at Boise State since 1993, was cited for her work as faculty adviser to the Student Nurses Association and her membership on various university, College of Health Sciences and nursing department committees. She was also recognized for her work with the Idaho Nurses Association, the American Holistic Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau and the American Association of Critical Care Nursing.

Hereford, who joined the faculty at Boise State in 1995, was recognized for her efforts to provide quality clinical learning experiences for her students and for bringing her real-life nursing experience into the classroom.

Satterwhite, a member of the Boise State faculty since 1991, was honored for her years of involvement with the nursing department and her activity in the community — including membership with the Treasure Valley Reproductive Health Board at Central District Health Department and for her service as vice chair of the Program Services Committee for the Idaho chapter of the March of Dimes.

Gehrke, a faculty member since 1987, was cited for her 15 years of teaching community health nursing and for leading many community health student projects. She also was recognized for her participation on numerous local and state boards and task forces, including the Idaho Immunize by Two Coalition.

In addition, the department of nursing also selected its outstanding students for 2001-02. The following students were honored:
