Classical guitarist Jason Vieaux, known for his virtuosity, expressive
music-making and easygoing manner with audiences, will perform at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Admission to the concert,
sponsored by the Idaho Classical Guitar Society and the Boise State University
Classical Guitar Society, is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
Tickets are available at Old Boise Guitar, 525 Main St. in Boise; by calling
David Boehlke at 344-0258; or at the door.
Vieaux, currently the head of the Cleveland Institute of Music guitar
department, gained international recognition in 1992 when he became the youngest
first-prize winner in the history of the prestigious Guitar Foundation of
America international competition. As part of his prize-winning tour, he played
to a full house of enthusiastic aficionados in Boise in 1993.
Vieaux was chosen as a 2002 National Public Radio “Performance Today” Young
Artist in Residence, which resulted in a week of solo classical guitar and
chamber music performances on national radio.
Regarding Vieaux’s artistry, a reviewer for Gramophone (London) wrote,
“There are many finger-perfect guitarists on tap, but those of Mr. Vieaux’s
natural musicality are rare indeed. You just can’t program sensitivity of this
kind.”
Vieaux’s program will include “Variations on a Theme of Mozart, Op. 9” by
Fernando Sor, “Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Minor” by J.S. Bach, “Sonatina
Meridional” by Manuel Ponce, “Variations on a Moldavian Hora” by Ian
Krouse, “Capricho Catalan” and “Sevilla” by Isaac Albeniz and “Suite
del Recuerdo” by Jose Luis Merlin.
