The Marian Anderson String Quartet, which has played at
venues ranging from the Alice Tully Hall during the 1993 Presidential
Inauguration to soup kitchens, will continue the 2002-03 Classic Performances
series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Boise State University Special Events
Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, students 17 and under and
Boise State students, faculty, staff and alumni at Select-a-Seat outlets,
426-1494 or www.idahotickets.com
or at the door.
The quartet is the first African American ensemble in history to win a major
classical music competition, and their performance is in conjunction with events
that commemorate Black History month at Boise State. On September 30, 1989, the
members of the quartet came together as the Chaminade Quartet, unaware that they
would soon change history. After winning the 1991 International Cleveland
Quartet Competition, the ensemble requested permission of the legendary
contralto Marian Anderson to use her name for the group.
The quartet — Marianne Henry and Nicole Cherry, violins, Diedra Lawrence,
viola and Michael Cameron, cello — is committed to enriching the musical and
cultural life of any receptive community.
The concert is presented by the Boise State Student Union. The Classic
Performances Series is designed by students to bring to campus musicians who
represent an eclectic blend of tradition and today. For more information call
426-1223.
