María Alicia Garza, a Boise State professor of modern languages and
literatures, and Charles Hanna, a Boise State physics professor, were recently
named the recipients of the university’s 2002 College of Arts and Sciences
Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards.
Garza was honored for excellence in teaching and Hanna was honored for
excellence in research. The awards were presented by Phillip Eastman, dean of
the College of Arts and Sciences.
Garza was cited for her dedication and skill in the classroom, her dynamic
teaching style, and her “high level of professionalism [that] serves as a
catalyst to the creation of an environment in which all students can succeed,”
according to the citation.
Hanna was honored for his “extraordinary success” in his scientific
research, which focuses on quantum physics and nanoscience. Since coming to
Boise State in 1996, Hanna has received a number of grants, including grants
from the National Science Foundation and the Research Corporation.
Garza and Hanna each received an honorarium, and their names have been added to
a perpetual plaque outside the dean’s office.
