AWARD-WINNING INDIE FILMS PRESENTED BY STUDENT
PROGRAMS BOARD
Two award-winning independent films will be featured in
pre-broadcast screenings, presented by Boise State University Student Programs
Board. Both films begin at 8 p.m. at the Student Union Special Events Center and
are free and open to the public.
March 4 – "Daughter from Danang"
Produced by Gail Dolgin and Vicente Franco, this film has
won several awards, including Best Documentary at the New Jersey International
Film Festival in 2002 and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in
2002. In this film, a Vietnamese mother and her Amerasian daughter are reunited
after 22 years. Both have dreamed of a joyful reunion, but their hopes are
shattered as cultural differences and the years of separation take their toll.
"Daughter from Danang" is about a war in the past and making peace
with the present.
March 18 – "Chiefs"
Produced by Donna Dewey, this film won Best Documentary at
the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002. In "Chiefs," Beaver C’Bearing and
his fellow Chiefs want to bring the high school state basketball championship
back to Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation and make their people proud.
But while struggling through his senior year, he is forced to re-evaluate the
importance of basketball. Following two years in the lives of Beaver and his
teammates, Daniel Junge’s "Chiefs" explores what it means to grow up
Native American at the turn of the 21st century.
