JAZZ SATURDAY PROGRAMS FEATURE ACCOMPLISHED MUSICIANS
The next workshop and concert of the Jazz Saturdays
series will be on Saturday, March 15, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall
on the campus of Boise State University. A workshop will be held at 1 p.m.
and a concert at 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to everyone.
The featured guest artists for the concert will be
bassist/vocalist Kristin Korb, guitarist John Stowell and drummer John
Bishop, along with local jazz musicians Chuck Smith (piano), Rob Walker
(trumpet) and Brent Jensen (saxophone).
This installment of the workshop series will feature
a panel discussion titled "Jazz Careers." The panel (Korb,
Stowell, Bishop, Smith, Walker and Jensen) will discuss current trends in
jazz education, establishing your own record label, the life of a
freelance jazz musician, jazz composition and arranging, women in jazz and
much more.
Bassist and vocalist Korb is a freelance jazz
musician based in Glendale, Calif. She was formerly the director of jazz
studies at Central Washington University in Ellensburg and has recorded
and performed with Ray Brown, Benny Green, Conte Candoli, Jeff Hamilton,
Mike Wofford and others. Her most recent compact disc, "Where Youll
Find Me," is available through her Web site, www.kristinkorb.com.
Stowell from Portland, Ore., is one of the busiest
jazz guitarists in the business. He has performed and presented clinics in
Russia, Norway, Switzerland, France, Australia, Germany and throughout the
United States. His most recent compact disc, "The Banff
Sessions," features him in duo and trio settings with Canadian
bassist Don Thompson and saxophone legend Dave Liebman. More information
on Stowell may be found on his Web site, www.johnstowell.com.
In 1997 in Seattle, Bishop formed Origin Records, a
jazz record label, and OriginArts, a compact disc production/design house,
to help further the exposure of Northwest artists and their music. With
more than 50 CD releases and a wide array of concerts and events,
OriginArts has become one of the premier jazz organizations in the
Northwest. In addition to his role as drummer
for the New Stories Trio, Bishop has performed with
a wide variety of jazz luminaries including Benny Golson, Bobby McFerrin,
Buddy DeFranco, Diane Schuur, Kenny Werner and countless others. More
information on OriginArts may be found online at www.originarts.com.
Pianist Smith was Paul Ankas musical director for
eight years. He has performed with Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Gary Foster,
Bob Mintzer and many other jazz greats. Smiths latest recording,
"New Territory," may be purchased online at www.thenewtrio.com.
Walker has worked professionally as a
composer/arranger, toured with Ray Charles, and has extensive knowledge of
the music business, resulting in the success of his Web site, www.mp3.com/robwalker.
Music from that site has charted at the No. 1 spots on the mp3 jazz charts
and has led to appearances at the International Festival de Jazz in San
Miguel de Allende, Mexico, the Park City Jazz Festival and jazz club dates
in Boston and Pittsburgh. Walker is also an adjunct marketing professor at
Boise State.
Jensen, Jazz Saturdays artistic director, is
also the director of jazz studies at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin
Falls. His debut recording for the Origin record label, "The Sound of
a Dry Martini: Remembering Paul Desmond," made JazzWeeks
Top 100 jazz recordings for 2002 list and held the No. 1 spot on jazz
radio stations across the country including WRTI (Philadelphia), WICN
(Worcester, Mass.) and KUSD (Sioux Falls, S.D.). More information on
Jensen may be found at his Web site, www.brentjensenjazz.com.
The Jazz Saturdays series is underwritten by
Gayle Manufacturing Company of Nampa with assistance from Jazz Educators
of Idaho Inc. and the Boise State music department. More information on
