"FRIDA"
TO BE SHOWN AT BOISE STATE FOR WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
In conjunction with Women’s History Month "Frida,"
a film about the life and loves of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, will be
shown at 9 p.m. March 11 at the Boise State University Special Events
Center. This presentation is sponsored by the Boise State Student Programs
Board. Tickets are available at the door, $2 general admission and $1
Boise State students, faculty and staff; admission includes popcorn and
soda.
Kahlo was born in Mexico City in 1907, although she
claimed her birth year was 1910 because she wanted her life to begin at
the same time as the Mexican revolution. At this time, Mexico was a hub
for political and intellectual excitement. This film examines her life,
which was punctuated by suffering, both physical and emotional. She
contracted polio as a young girl, which left her right leg noticeably
thinner than her left, and was involved in a bus accident in 1925. A pole
pierced her from her stomach to her pelvis in the accident, and as a
result she endured 32 operations in her lifetime and was plagued by pain
and fatigue until her death in 1954. Her pain was amplified by the
emotional distress associated with her marriage to Diego Rivera. Their
life together was both passionate and destructive – they shared a deep
love but both parties engaged in extra-marital affairs and at one point
they divorced only to remarry a year later.
Women’s History Month strives to celebrate the
triumphs and accomplishments of ordinary women doing extraordinary things.
