BOISE STATE KICKS OFF ANNUAL ROCK CLIMBING
COMPETITION
Boise State University celebrates the beginning of
the spring season with an all-access buck-off for the annual Indoor
Climbing Competition, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 15 at the rock
climbing gym in the Kinesiology Building.
Climbing program coordinator Jess Weiss, who has
been rock climbing for 19 years, will be running what he calls the area’s
largest amateur climbing event. The competition generally attracts 60-70
competitors, although organizers hope to attract even more this year.
Events like this “help to foster a local climbing
community and bring people together,” said Weiss.
Weiss said participants tend to be mostly male,
despite the fact that the world’s most successful rock climber, Lynn
Hill, is a woman. Since March is Women’s History Month, Weiss hopes that
more women will step forward to fill that gap.
This year’s competition will be the last to be
held in the old climbing gym, which is among the oldest in the United
States. Next year’s competition will be held in Boise State’s new
campus recreation center. The old gym’s 2,600 feet of climbing space
will be replaced with a new and improved 7,000-feet climbing space.
The competition, which will include one boulder
route and five top rope competitions, is open to everyone of all
abilities, but competitors must provide their own equipment. A $20
registration fee is payable at Boise State’s Outdoor Center, located in
the same building as the Recreation Center on University Drive.
The event includes a raffle, with prizes ranging
from clothing and climbing holds to scenic flights. Competition winners
will be awarded certificates and five extra raffle tickets.
Tickets will
be available at the door for $25. Call 426-1946 for more information.
