TIMBERLINE CLAIMS VARSITY ‘JETS’ ENGINEERING
TITLE AT BOISE STATE
Timberline High School captured the varsity championship
and Eagle High School won the junior varsity title at the southwest Idaho JETS
TEAMS (Junior Engineering Technical Society, Tests of Engineering Aptitude,
Mathematics and Science) competition held at Boise State University March 15.
Approximately 160 students from area high schools
participated in teams of eight. The annual event was hosted by the Boise State
College of Engineering and includes a two-part test.
The Timberline B team took first place in the varsity
division with 57 out of a possible 100 points. Team members are Jason Danner,
Halena Van Deusen, Jake Renz, Aaron Dorn, Jyoti Sood, Kirsten Clark, Tim
Ashworth and Henry Unrein.
Nampa High School’s team finished second with 56 points.
Nampa’s team was comprised of Carina Castaneda, Steve Peterman, Joe Nutting,
Dmitriy Myedvyedyev, Chad Gibbons, Dillon Wardwell, Shawn Gram Kow and Rebecca
De Leon.
In the junior varsity competition the Eagle High School
team of Matthew Wilson, Matt Johnson, Ryan Burningham, Ruibo Li, Greg Benjamin,
Nick Guho, Kenneth Sikes and Owen Fletcher took first place with 49 points.
Kuna was the JV runner-up with 36 points, scored by the
team of Julia Schormack, Cassie Gaige, Brianna McNall, Jason Brotherton, Wesley
Cole, Devin McCleve and Jared Cole.
A total of 20 teams competed, nine JV and 11 varsity, from
the following high schools: Eagle, Kuna, Nampa Christian, Emmett, Boise High,
Buhl, Bishop Kelly, Timberline, Idaho City and Nampa.
The competition is part of a national academic program and
that helps prepare students for potential careers in engineering and the
sciences. The TEAMS competition enables high school students to learn team
development skills and then participate as a group in an engineering problem
competition. Problems cover mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, visual
interpretation of information, computer applications and reading analysis and
interpretation.
Each year more than 20,000 high school students
participate at more than 100 TEAMS sites nationwide. JETS will announce state
rankings by April 3 and national rankings by April 29 and will recognize the top
10 national teams at both the varsity and junior varsity level.
