HELPING HAND TASK FORCE MASSAGES BOISE STATE
COMMUNITY
A one-woman massage machine is now rubbing out the kinks
in the Boise State University community. Josie Palomo offers affordable massages
to students, faculty and staff in the Student Recreation Center (REC Center) for
just $30-$35 per hour. Comparable off-campus rates are $50-$60 per hour.
Before becoming a certified massage therapist, Palomo
attended the Academy of Professional Careers for nine months and volunteered as
a certified nursing assistant in the pharmacy at a veterans’ hospital.
As an academy student, Palomo was required to complete 30
hours of externship, which she chose to complete at Boise State’s on-campus
REC Center. When the massage therapist position later opened up, she applied.
Center Associate Director Jenny Nigrini said hiring Palomo
is part of the REC’s mission to serve both students and employees.
The massage program is as much about providing valuable
experience as it is about offering affordable services, Nigrini said. “Our
goal is not to make a million dollars on this. It’s just to provide [health]
services all in one place.”
And what’s in it for Palomo? “Just that smile when
they say ‘that feels really good,’” she said.
To schedule a massage, call the REC Center’s front desk
at 426-1131.
Clinically referred massages are also available at no cost
for any student covered by student health insurance. Certified massage therapist
Ben Falter conducts clinical massages. To schedule a
referral appointment for a $5 administrative fee, call the
Boise State Health and Wellness Center clinical services provider at 426-1459.
