BOISE STATE’S ‘SUMMER AND
SMOKE’ OPENS AT MORRISON CENTER APRIL 17
The Boise State University theatre arts department will
present its final production of the 2002-03 season, Tennessee Williams’ “Summer
and Smoke,” at 7:30 p.m. April 17-19 and 23-26 and 2 p.m. April 27 in Stage II
of the Morrison Center. Tickets are $9 general admission and $7 for non-Boise
State students, seniors and alumni. Free tickets are available for Boise State
students, faculty and staff at on-campus box offices.
One of Williams’ most romantic and lyrical plays, “Summer
and Smoke” explores the eternal struggle between the body and the soul, the
flesh and the spirit. Alma Winemiller, a proper minister’s daughter, and John
Buchanan, a brilliant but undisciplined young doctor, have been neighbors and
friends all their lives. While each senses something irresistible in the other,
they have remained virtually strangers. This is the story of their halting and
painful efforts to forge a passionate spiritual and physical union.
The cast includes Boise State theatre arts alumni Ashley
Martel-Fullton as Alma, Cody Hyslop as Rev. Winemiller and Boise theatre favorite
Stitch Marker as Doc Buchanan. Current theatre arts major Ryan Capps plays John.
Other cast members include Boise State students Kathy
Simpson as Mrs. Winemiller; Maria Sermonia as Rosa; Jessika Boyll as Nellie;
Roger Venable as Roger; Tona Mitcham as Mrs. Bassett; Josh Belville as Vernon;
Courtney Hartman as Rosemary; Joe Firmage as Gonzales; and Joe Lavigne as
Archie.
Guest artist Rusty Wilson, co-artistic director of Company
of Fools in Hailey, directs the production. Wilson has produced a number of
highly successful shows at the renowned theatre, including “Fool for Love”
and “True West” with Bruce Willis, “Side Man,” “Waiting for Godot”
and the recent “The Tempest.” While he is in residence, Wilson is teaching a
special acting class for theatre arts majors.
