CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT STUDENTS TAKE 5TH STRAIGHT NATIONAL TITLE

For the fifth consecutive year and 18 of the last 23 years, the Construction Management Association (CMA) at Boise State University earned first place honors in the national student chapter championships sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). CMA president Jeff Tonkin and past-president Dan Feldman accepted the awards at the AGC’s annual convention in Honolulu, Hawaii in March.

Of the three national student chapter awards given by the AGC, the Boise State CMA chapter earned two — first place for campus activities (for the fifth straight year) and first place for community activities (which it has won several times in previous years.) About 150 college and university CM programs are eligible to participate in the awards competitions.

CMA, comprised of Boise State construction management majors, earned its most recent national awards through hundreds of hours of service to the campus and community. Boise State CM professor Marv Gabert serves as the group’s faculty adviser.

A few of the many activities CMA undertook in 2002 included: building ball walls at several local elementary schools, constructing a picnic pavilion at an elementary school, speaking to elementary, middle and high school students about careers in construction management, taking a key role in organizing the Idaho Chapter of the National Women in Construction’s benefit auction, maintaining a computer lab on campus and hosting a presentation on sexual harassment. They even demonstrated their teamwork by entering a float in the homecoming parade for the first time and winning the alumni association’s award for best float.

Construction management at Boise State is an accredited bachelor of science degree program. The program first began at Boise State in 1979, and CMA has repeatedly won national awards since that time. CMA members not only enroll in challenging engineering and construction classes and complete general university requirements, but also dedicate hours of volunteer work to the extracurricular club.
