BOISE STATE ANNOUNCES GENE HARRIS JAZZ FESTIVAL WINNERS

The winners of this year’s Boise State University Gene Harris Jazz Festival student competitions were decided this afternoon. For the second consecutive year, the Jazz Festival awarded cash and certificates for new musical instruments as prizes to winning bands and soloists. The winners are:

Best Overall Festival Band

Mead High School, Spokane, Wash., Director Terry Lack

Best High School Class AAA-AA (1,000-plus students)

1st Place - Mead High School, Spokane, Wash., Director Terry Lack

2nd Place - Borah High School, Director Kevin Sullivan

Best High School Class A-B (Up to 999 students)

Nampa High School No. 3, Director Tom Stone

Junior High School

1st Place - Vallivue Middle School, Director Eric Adamson

Soloists

Best Saxophone - Rodney Zuroevost, Borah High School

Best Trumpet - Brad Fulkerson, Mead High School

Best Trombone - Tim Lienhard, Cheney High School No. 1 (Washington)

Best Six String Guitar - Tim Tietjan, Capital High School

Best Drum - Paul Lack, Mead High School

Best Piano - Megan Meade, Eagle High School

Judge’s Choice

Mead High School, Director Terry Lack

The Judge’s Choice winners will open tonight’s Festival finale concert at 7 p.m. in the Pavilion at Boise State featuring The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Tickets are available at the door for $20-$40.

Friday’s Judge’s Choice winners, who opened the Friday evening jazz concert, were River Glen Junior High School, Boise, under the direction of Karen Danley, and Capital High School, Boise, under the direction of Marty Worthington. This year’s Vocal Competition winner was Mt. Hood Community College, who also performed Friday night.

Nearly 1,000 junior high school and high school students from throughout the Northwest participated in the 6th annual Festival. This year's participants were:
