EXPERT ON WATER ISSUES GIVES FREE MULTI-MEDIA PRESENTATION APRIL 25

Robert Glennon, a University of Arizona law professor who is an expert on water issues, will present “Water Follies: The Impact of Groundwater Pumping on the Environment” at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, April 25, in Room 106 of the Multipurpose Building at Boise State University.

The public is invited to attend this free multi-media presentation, sponsored by Boise Cascade Corp. and the Boise State Honors College. Pay parking is available in the parking structure on Brady Street and University Drive adjacent to the Multipurpose Building.

Glennon is the Morris K. Udall Professor of Law and Public Policy at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. He is the author of numerous publications, including a new book, Water Follies: Groundwater Pumping and the Fate of America’s Fresh Waters.

Glennon’s presentation will explore the environmental catastrophes created by excessive groundwater pumping. “Innocently begun with the intent of utilizing an untouched source, we have since learned that this water supply is not limitless,” Glennon wrote. “Alas, as our groundwater use has increased, the pumping has caused rivers, springs, lakes and wetlands to dry up, the ground beneath us to collapse, and fish, birds, wildlife, trees and shrubs to die. This talk will illustrate the scope of the problem with stories from around the country. These water follies are tales of human foibles including greed, stubbornness and especially, the unlimited human capacity to ignore reality.”

The Boise Cascade Corp. Environmental Affairs Lecture is presented each year for the benefit of local students, faculty and community members interested in environmental issues. For more information about Glennon’s presentation, call 426-1248.
