BOISE STATE FILLS MONTH OF MAY WITH VARIETY OF MUSICAL FARE

The Boise State University music department and music faculty offer a plethora of concerts in the month of May, ranging from tuba recitals to classical performances. Here is the schedule; all locations are on campus unless otherwise noted. For more information on any of these concerts, call 426-3980.

May 4, Special Events Center. 7:30 p.m. — Concerto Aria

This concert features five student winners from the Boise State music department’s concerto-aria competition, accompanied by the University and Chamber orchestras. Boise State music professor and flutist Liana Tyson will also perform. Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 6, Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. — Tubafest and Trombone Choir Recital

How low will they go in this concert featuring student tuba and euphonium soloists, a tuba-euphonium quartet, the Trombone Choir and the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble? Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 8, Special Events Center. 7:30 p.m. — All-Campus Concert Band

Titled “Something for Everyone,” this All-Campus Concert Band performance provides just that. Works include “Funiculi, Funicula,” a “West Side Story” medley and “Burgler’s Holiday.” Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 9, Hemingway Center. 8 p.m. — Viola Recital

Violist Linda Kline Lamar and pianist James Cook perform works by Bach, Liszt, Womak and Shostakovich as part of the Faculty Artist Series. Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 9, Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7 p.m. — Chamber Music Recital

A contemporary chamber music recital featuring the music of Idaho composer Carol Matthews, including her new piece “As Dusk in Paradise” for soprano, oboe and percussion. Performers include Liana Tyson, Blake Tyson and guest musicians from the University of Oregon. Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 9, St. Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral, 8th and State. 7:30 p.m. — Meistersingers

The Meistersingers is Boise State’s top touring chorus. This concert features J.S. Bach’s “Lobet dem Herrn,” and masterworks from the Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary periods. Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 10, Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. — Scholarship Benefit Concert with Charles Enlow

Boise State alumnus Charles A. Enlow will perform an all-French piano concert featuring works by Franck, Fauré, Debussy and Poulenc. The concert benefits the James Hopper Music Scholarship. Hopper was a longtime Treasure Valley clarinetist, music teacher and Boise State professor. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and students.

May 11, Borah High School Auditorium, 6001 Cassia. 7:30 p.m. — Boise Philharmonic Treasure Valley Youth Symphony

This symphony is made up of the valley’s best and brightest young musicians, under the direction of Boise State music professor David Saunders. The evening of orchestral works features pieces by Tchaikovsky and Barodin, with the “Elgar Cello Concerto” performed by soloist Andy Badke. Admission is $2-$5 at the door.

May 12, Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7 p.m. — Flute Society Instructors’ Recital

Performers for this flute concert include Boise flutists Liana Tyson, Jennifer Robertson and Francesca Arnone. Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff.

May 21-22, Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. — Boise Choristers

The Boise Choristers women’s choral group presents “The Color of Music,” under the direction of Karma Ellsworth. Money raised from the concert is used to fund Boise State music scholarships. Recipients of the 2002-03 scholarships will also perform at the concert, which includes sacred, classic and Civil War era songs, as well as songs with a color in the title. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to benefit the scholarship fund.
