CINCO DE MAYO EVENTS PLANNED AT BOISE STATE
Music by the popular band Grupo Karibe, a car show and
folkloric dancing are just some of the highlighted events at Boise State
Universitys Cinco de Mayo Fiesta from noon-6 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at the
Student Union Patio. The celebration, open to everyone, is presented by the
Boise State Organizacin de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos.
Community members are invited to sample authentic Mexican
food, watch a jalapeo eating contest, view the crowning of Miss Cinco de Mayo,
participate in the Grito contest or listen to the Sol de Acapulco Mariachi. The
fiesta will also include activities for children such as face painting,
astrojumps, arts and crafts, piatas and more.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates May 5, 1862, when the Mexican
army fought the invading French army lead by Emperor Napoleon III at the Battle
of Puebla. The Mexican battle victory sparked the Mexican people to revolt and
forced the French to withdraw their claim on Mexico City and dissolve their
imposed governmental system.
All events are free but food prices will vary. For more
