BOISE STATE SPANISH PROFESSOR TO PRESENT
QUINCEAÑERA KEYNOTE
Boise State Spanish professor Alicia Garza is the keynote
speaker Saturday, April 19, at the Fifth Annual Quinceañera Gala and Silent
Auction presented by the Hispanic Cultural Center of Idaho.
Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Riverside
Hotel, 2900 Chinden Blvd., and include dinner, Garza’s keynote, an appearance
by professional entertainer Ricardo Corazon of Los Angeles, a Mexican folkloric
presentation, the student’s waltz performance and a silent auction. Tickets to
this “black tie optional” event are $50 per person. To order tickets call

Following the gala, a “Red Hot Salsa” dance
instruction and demonstration will begin at 9:30 p.m., presented by Ruben and
Lisa Flores. Rhythms such as merengue, salsa and cha-cha will be featured. Cost
is $10 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door or can be ordered in advance
at 442 0823.
The gala is the culmination of the Stay-in-School
Quinceañera Program, an after-school educational program targeting eighth-grade
girls. Participants attend a series of workshops that focus on basic skills
building for personal development as well as cultural traditions. The goal of
the program is to encourage the students to continue their educations.
Sixty students, 20 each from Nampa, Caldwell and Wilder,
will perform the traditional waltz under the direction of choreographer Norma
Pintar, and some will speak on their program experience and dreams for the
future.
