Boise State University
economics major Tony Pori has been awarded a Phi Kappa Phi
Award of Excellence for 2003-04. Pori will receive $1,500 to
aid in his pursuit of a Ph.D. in economics.
Pori of Boise will receive his
bachelor's degree in economics with a quantitative emphasis
this spring and will begin study in the doctoral program at
the University of Oregon in the fall. It is common in the
economics field for students to progress directly from
undergraduate school to a doctoral program. Currently, Pori
runs The Math Advantage, a tutoring center for junior high and
high school students.
Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest and
largest national honor society dedicated to the recognition
and promotion of academic excellence in all fields of higher
education. Founded in 1932, Phi Kappa Phi's Graduate
Fellowship Program allocates more than $460,000 annually to
deserving students for first-year graduate study. Fifty-two
Fellowships of $8,000 and 30 Awards of Excellence for $1,500
are awarded each year.
The selection process for the
awards is based on: an applicant's undergraduate academic
performance; leadership and service on campus and in the
community; evidence of graduate potential; personal statement
of educational perspective, purpose and objectives; and
evaluation reports from three individuals that attest to the
student's performance, citizenship and character.
Headquartered on the Louisiana
State University campus in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi
inducts about 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and
alumni from 291 select colleges and universities each year.
