Three faculty members have been honored by Boise State University as University Foundation Scholars for 2003. The awards are given annually for ongoing commitment, expertise and accomplishments in teaching, research/creative activities and professionally related service. Each winner received a $2,000 award.

Stephanie Witt, Boise State's associate vice president for academic affairs, said it is important to recognize excellence among faculty members and that recognition with a monetary award is a great way to honor them.

This year's winners are:

Research and Creative Activity: Del Parkinson, professor of music, has been honored for research and creative activity. He is an 18-year member of the Boise State faculty. Parkinson has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as both an educator and a concert pianist and has been influential at the national and international levels. Described by a colleague as the "consummate musician and pianist," Parkinson has performed in debut recitals at Wigmore Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York City. His past awards include Fulbright-Hays and Kellogg Foundation grants and the 1998 Idaho Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.

Service: Pennie Seibert, professor of psychology, is the 2003 University Foundation Scholar Award winner in Service. A 13-year member of the Boise State faculty, Seibert has been involved in numerous university, professional and community organizations over the years.

Her service to Boise State includes two terms as president of the Faculty Senate and membership on two search committees for the dean of her college. She is described as a "tireless giver" to Boise State, her profession, her community and to her students outside the classroom.

Teaching: Les Alm, professor of political science, is the 2003 University Foundation Scholar Award winner in Teaching. Alm has been with Boise State for 12 years and served as political science chair from 2000-2002. As a high school mathematics teacher, a member of the Bowling Green State University faculty and at Boise State, he has received numerous honors and awards. He has been described as a "master educator, gifted in his ability to make complex material accessible, devoted to making sure that all students understand, capable of infusing subject matter with vitality and excitement, and possessing a genuine care for students."

This year's Foundation Scholar finalists were: Teaching, Susan Shadle, chemistry; Service, Peter Lutze, communication, and Suzanne McCorkle, communication; and Research and Creative Activity: Charles Hanna, physics, and Gary Moncrief, political science.
