A team of Boise State
University advertising students took first place in the
regional National Student Advertising Competition recently
held in Sun River, Ore.
Sponsored by the American
Advertising Federation, the NSAC is the premier college
advertising competition. It provides more than 3,000 college
students with "real-world" experience by requiring a
strategic advertising/marketing/media campaign for a corporate
sponsor. Boise State is one of 16 schools selected to present
ad campaigns to a panel of industry executives at the AAF
National Conference June 3 in Los Angeles.
Boise State has been competing
in the regional competition for 20 years. Other participants
this year included University of Idaho, University of Oregon,
University of Montana, Idaho State University, Portland State
University, Brigham Young University-Idaho and Washington
State University.
This year's product was the
Toyota Matrix car, around which all student teams had to
design an advertising campaign. The Boise State team received
high marks for repositioning the car in the market by
developing a new class of vehicle, the Urban Utility Vehicle (UUV),
in which to market it.
In addition to the team award,
Boise State student Brian Critchfield won the best presenter
award and Boise State won for best new presentation technique
using flash animation.
Members of the presenting team
were Critchfield, Bryan Blemler, Shelly Huth, John Hardesty
and Leslie Brown. Additional team members include Angie
Schwaller, Melissa Schurger, Terri Stenkamp, Mike Roche,
Cassie Clancy and Tony Janquart.
Boise State instructor and team
adviser Jay Longwell said the win is noteworthy because with
recent budget cuts the advertising program was in jeopardy.
The students raised their own money to attend the competition
and members of the community joined with Boise State to
support the program.
