Boise State University
students, employees and organizations that contributed
outstanding service to the university and community during the
2002-03 academic year were honored at a recognition dinner on
April 30.
The Associated Students of
Boise State University (ASBSU) Hall of Fame Awards were
presented to the following:
Jeffery Alan Tonkin, a
senior construction management student from Boise, won the
award given to an ASBSU-recognized student organization leader
for his work as an officer of Construction Management
Association (CMA). His contributions include holding a
position in CMA for the last three years, this year as
president, and helping the club receive national recognition,
including two national championship awards during his
presidency alone. He has also been the project manager for
many of the club projects, including the outdoor covered
pavilion at Spalding Elementary School, where he has also led
many "Tool Box Talks" to students interested in
learning about construction.
Tawnya Ward, a graduate
student from Boise, received the ASBSU Outstanding Academic
Achievement Award for her academic accomplishments combined
with community service. Her accomplishments include selection
in 2001 to represent Boise State in the Arthur Anderson Tax
Challenge competition. The Boise State team finished in the
top 20 teams nationally, earning an honorable mention and a
scholarship award for the College of Business. Additionally,
Ward recently passed all sections of the Uniform CPA Exam on
her first attempt, a feat that fewer than 10 percent of CPA
exam candidates achieve nationally. Ward received the second
highest score in Idaho on the November 2002 exam. Ward is the
current president of Golden Key International Honour Society.
Jillana Slocum, a senior
majoring in interdisciplinary studies in history, psychology
and health studies from Meridian, received the ASBSU Award for
Community Service. Slocum has connected other students to
service opportunities through her current employment as the
community outreach coordinator for Boise State University
service learning and through her work with the Volunteer
Services Board (VSB). In 2002, Slocum was a committee member
on the Faces of Homelessness campaign sponsored by VSB and
Student Programs Board. She has also served as director of VSB
in 2000-2001 and an officer of VSB in 1999-2000. She produced
the first annual hunger banquet at Boise State in 2000,
through her work with VSB, and developed a training manual for
VSB while she was director. She has been active in the Idaho
Progressive Student Alliance and is an advocate for farm
workers as well as a volunteer on the Women and Children’s
Alliance crisis line.
Mark Dunham, a 1984
graduate of Boise State in communication, received the ASBSU
Alumni Award for significant contributions to the university.
Dunham, currently the executive director of the Idaho
Association of Realtors, has served on the Alumni Association
board of directors for six years. He has held many positions
on the board, including president in 2001-2002 and first vice
president in 2000-2001. He currently serves on the Boise State
presidential search committee and has served on selection
committees for the alumni director and the vice president of
university advancement, among others.
Wing Yin Winnie Tong, a
senior from Hong Kong, China, received the ASBSU award for
Student Government. As an ASBSU senator-at-large, Tong has
been an advocate for international students on campus. She has
worked with international and ethnic student organizations
such as the Vietnamese Student Association and International
Student Association in producing events. She is an active
member of the Cultural Center and has worked with the Cultural
Ethnic Diversity Board. She also chairs the Student Affairs
Committee in the ASBSU Senate.
Greg Sasser, a senior
from John Day, Ore. majoring in education, received the
Varsity Athletic Hall of Fame Award. Sasser was a safety for
the Boise State football team from 1998-2001. Because of his
athletic and academic acheivements, he has been offered
several coaching positions in the Boise area. In addition to
playing and coaching football, Sasser was one of the most
valued members of the Boise State speech and debate team.
Other ASBSU awards were
presented to the following:
Rob Meyer, Associate
Director of Student Union and Activities, received the David
S. Taylor Service to Students Award. Meyer has served as an
adviser and mentor to students at Boise State for 15 years. He
is responsible for assisting former ASBSU president Eric Love
in establishing a university-wide Martin Luther King Jr. Human
Rights Week Celebration. Additionally, he has been
instrumental in implementing other programs that benefit
students, such as the Student Union Classic Performances
Series and the Student Union Art Gallery. Countless members of
Student Programs Board and ASBSU have been mentored by Meyer,
and many of them offered letters in support of his nomination
because of his dedication to, patience with and support of
students.
Caile Spear, an
assistant professor in the Kinesiology department, received
the award for Outstanding Student Organization Adviser. Spear
has been the adviser for the Men’s Lacrosse Club for four
years. During the 2002-03 academic year, Spear established a
one-credit class available to lacrosse team members. Spear is
described as the team’s academic coach, because she ensures
that the team is taking care of business in the classroom with
her reminder that the number one objective on and off the
field is the same: "Take first place!" Under Spear’s
leadership, the men’s lacrosse team has flourished both
athletically and academically.
For being role models and
mentors to other student leaders and for going beyond the call
