Boise
State University has announced the appointment of Cheryl
Schrader as dean of the College of Engineering and a professor
of electrical and computer engineering. Schrader currently
serves as professor of electrical engineering at the
University of Texas at San Antonio and until January was also
associate dean for graduate studies and research. When she
assumes her duties at Boise State in mid-July, Schrader will
be one of only a handful of women engineering deans in the
United States. Her appointment is contingent upon approval by
the State Board of Education.
Schrader will succeed Lynn
Russell, who is retiring. Under Russell’s leadership, the
six-year-old Boise State College of Engineering has earned
recognition as one of the top undergraduate engineering
colleges rated by U.S. News and World Report, and the number
of faculty has increased to 50. Funded research projects
exceed $9.1 million, and students and faculty have earned
national honors in numerous areas.
“I am pleased and excited to
be joining Boise State University at a time of great
potential,” said Schrader. “Together with community,
university, business, industry and government partners, it is
my goal to ensure that the College of Engineering is
recognized nationally as a quality gateway to highly rewarding
careers in engineering, computer science and technology
leadership. I look forward to growth of program offerings, to
increased research activities and to enhanced community
engagement.”
In addition to her work at the
University of Texas at San Antonio, Schrader is the current
president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE) Control Systems Society, a professional
organization with over 10,000 members worldwide. She earned
her bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering
from Valparaiso University and her master’s and Ph. D.
degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Notre
Dame.
Schrader has held positions in
private industry and has an extensive record of publications
and sponsored research in the area of systems and control. She
has also served as coordinator of bioengineering and
biotechnology initiatives at UTSA. She was named a 40 Under 40
Rising Star by the San Antonio Business Journal for
leadership, career success and community involvement.
