Boise State University’s Summer
DanceFest 2003, scheduled for June 9-21, is registering
students through June 8. DanceFest is an opportunity for
dancers ages 12 and older with intermediate/advanced to
advanced technique to experience a full day of classes and
rehearsal or register for just the technique classes.
The DanceFest workshop
experience will focus on new choreography from emerging
professional choreographers and dancers, culminating in a
series of public performances by the participating students.
DanceFest lasts two weeks with 10 days of technique classes
and choreography rehearsals. The workshop performances will be
Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21.
Russian-trained Larissa
Solovieva, former Ballet Idaho principal dancer Eloy Barragan,
now a professor of dance at the University of
California-Irvine, Ballet Idaho principal dancer Jennifer
Martin and Echo Waldron will teach the ballet curriculum.
Kelli Brown is the master jazz instructor and Lauren Edson will
teach modern technique.
Solovieva’s extensive
performing career includes a contract as a solo dancer and
singer at the Royal Hippodrome Theater in Brighton, England,
and line captain and choreographer for the Igor Kio Magic Show
in Moscow and throughout Russia. She also performed as a
principal jazz dancer with the Andre Sokolovsky Dance Company
and was the classical ballet teacher. Solovieva teaches the
Vaganova method of ballet.
Brown's professional experience
includes performing with the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics and
the Stampede Dancers. A second year company member of the
Idaho Dance Theatre, she also performs ballet, modern, tap and
flamenco. A ballet and jazz instructor at Albertson College
Idaho, Brown choreographs for a number of studio and
professional groups. Her teaching career also includes working
for 14 years for the dance organization, United Spirit
Association.
Edson graduated from North
Carolina School of the Arts in 2001 and trained at the
Juilliard School in New York City, where she toured throughout
the city, educating underprivileged youth of the importance of
the arts. Her studies have taken her to Hubbard Street Dance
Chicago, The Jeoffrey Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theater.
Barragan, Brown and Edson will
choreograph for the Summer DanceFest Concert Series. Other
choreographers include professional dancers, Idaho Dance
Theatre company members and Summer DanceFest faculty.
