Registration Ends Soon for Boise State's Summer DanceFest 2003

Boise State University’s Summer DanceFest 2003, scheduled for June 9-21, is registering students through June 8. DanceFest is an opportunity for dancers ages 12 and older with intermediate/advanced to advanced technique to experience a full day of classes and rehearsal or register for just the technique classes.

The DanceFest workshop experience will focus on new choreography from emerging professional choreographers and dancers, culminating in a series of public performances by the participating students. DanceFest lasts two weeks with 10 days of technique classes and choreography rehearsals. The workshop performances will be Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21.

Russian-trained Larissa Solovieva, former Ballet Idaho principal dancer Eloy Barragan, now a professor of dance at the University of California-Irvine, Ballet Idaho principal dancer Jennifer Martin and Echo Waldron will teach the ballet curriculum. Kelli Brown is the master jazz instructor and Lauren Edson will teach modern technique.

Solovieva’s extensive performing career includes a contract as a solo dancer and singer at the Royal Hippodrome Theater in Brighton, England, and line captain and choreographer for the Igor Kio Magic Show in Moscow and throughout Russia. She also performed as a principal jazz dancer with the Andre Sokolovsky Dance Company and was the classical ballet teacher. Solovieva teaches the Vaganova method of ballet.

Brown's professional experience includes performing with the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics and the Stampede Dancers. A second year company member of the Idaho Dance Theatre, she also performs ballet, modern, tap and flamenco. A ballet and jazz instructor at Albertson College Idaho, Brown choreographs for a number of studio and professional groups. Her teaching career also includes working for 14 years for the dance organization, United Spirit Association.

Edson graduated from North Carolina School of the Arts in 2001 and trained at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she toured throughout the city, educating underprivileged youth of the importance of the arts. Her studies have taken her to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Jeoffrey Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theater.

Barragan, Brown and Edson will choreograph for the Summer DanceFest Concert Series. Other choreographers include professional dancers, Idaho Dance Theatre company members and Summer DanceFest faculty.

All classes for DanceFest are held in the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts on the Boise State campus. Information is available at http://theatre.boisestate.edu/Summerdance/summerda.htm.
