Gene
Harris Summer Jazz Camp Open To Grades 5-12
Registrations are now being
accepted for Gene Harris Jazz Camp scheduled June 23-27 at
Boise State University.
The camp is open to instrumentalists in grades fifth through
12th who have a desire to learn jazz improvisation. Areas of
concentration will include jazz vocabulary, jazz
improvisational theory, jazz history, jazz listening skills,
jazz forms, jazz tunes and jazz performance. No previous
experience is needed.
The fee for the camp is $109 for the week. An early bird
registration fee of $99 is available for those who register by
May 31. Registration forms are available online at
www.geneharris.org or
by phone, 426-1772.
The camp will culminate in a Boise River Festival performance
at noon on June 27 at the Gene Harris Band Shell in Julia
Davis Park. The Gene Harris All-Star Band (high school
students) will perform at noon July 28 in the Gene Harris Band
Shell.
The camp is also open to educators for one continuing
education credit. Those interested in learning a new technique
for teaching jazz improvisation will study "The First Set" by
Chuck Smith, which can be obtained through the Boise State
Department of Music. This new concept of jazz education is
targeted at young improvisers beginning as early as the fifth
grade.
One credit is available through Boise State University for
$144.60. Those interested can register for the optional credit
on the first day of camp. Call 426-1596 for more information.
Faculty for the jazz camp includes Smith, an accomplished jazz
educator and performer. He will facilitate jazz improvisation,
jazz forms, piano and rhythm section. Brent Jensen, director
of jazz studies at the College of Southern Idaho, will lead
the jazz vocabulary, jazz history/listening and woodwinds. Rob
Walker, music educator and jazz composer/performer, will
present jazz theory, jazz ensembles and brass.
All members are accredited through the International Jazz
Educators Association (IAJE) and are founding faculty members
of Boise State's Jazz Saturdays series.
The jazz camp is part of Gene Harris Jazz Festival and Boise
State University Department of Music continuing jazz education
efforts. Elementary school clinics and adjudication also will
be added to the 2004 Gene Harris Jazz Festival. This
non-competitive division will provide an opportunity for
younger student to gain valuable experience and knowledge in
the art of jazz music.
