Doug
Yunker, a professor in the Boise State University School of Social
Work, has been named the 2003 Social Worker of the Year for the
state of Idaho. The award was announced by the Idaho chapter of
the National Association of Social Workers.
Yunker was recognized for his outstanding
leadership and contribution to a positive image for the
profession. In addition to his work at Boise State, he has served
as a member of the boards of directors or advisory committees for
several community organizations, including the Salvation Army,
Planned Parenthood, United Way, Idaho AIDS Foundation, Foster
Grandparents, Idaho Hunger Action Council and Mountain States
Health Corporation.
Denice Liley, also a professor of social work,
said in a letter of recommendation that, "Doug has had a profound
influence on the lives of many students, the delivery of social
work services and caring about the disenfranchised. [He] has a
clear focus of trying to make the world a better place on most any
day."
Department chair Martha Wilson, seconded that
opinion, adding, "He has constantly pressed our fellow Idahoans to
treat those without resources or opportunities with dignity and
respect. His service to the state has been a hallmark of social
advocacy for the oppressed and poor."
Yunker has taught at Boise State since 1976 and
was coordinator of the Boise State Interdisciplinary Studies in
Aging program from 1995-99. He is currently an advocate,
facilitator and organizer of the Capitol Boulevard Residents'
Association.
The National Association of Social Workers is an
