The Idaho Watercolor Society
will hold its 24th annual juried membership exhibition June
10-26 at the Boise State University Student Union Art Gallery.
The public is invited to attend the free awards reception
and slide show from 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 13. Free parking
for the night of the reception is available in the Student
Union visitor parking lot immediately east of the building.
Juror James Soares will be the
exhibition judge. Soares is a signature member of the National
Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Midwest Watercolor
Society, and an associate member of American Watercolor
Society. A graduate of California State University-Fresno, he
attended the Art Center College of Design. Soares has worked
as an art director and illustrator, operating his own graphic
arts business, and has won numerous national art awards. A
colorist who “thinks in terms of color shapes and
transitions,” Soares believes that a painting portrays the
“love relationship between the artist and the subject.”
The Idaho Watercolor
Society was founded in the fall of 1979 to support and promote
water media, and to educate the public as to its significance.
The organization currently has 259 members statewide. Six
regional centers are located in Boise, Moscow, Idaho Falls,
Pocatello, Twin Falls and Coeur d’Alene. Members of the
Society range from beginning painters to professional
watercolorists. The Society sponsors a range of activities
statewide, including exhibitions, workshops, paint-outs,
get-togethers and educational programs. Membership is open to
all Idaho residents.
Annually, IWS brings a
nationally recognized watercolorist to Idaho to teach
workshops and jury for awards. The annual juried membership
exhibition also includes a traveling show, selected by the
juror, that travels to each region of the state.
