Boise State Hosts International Animal Behavior Conference

About 500 scientists from around the globe will gather at Boise State University July 19-23 for the 40th annual conference of the Animal Behavior Society.

The conference, hosted by Boise State’s biology department, includes lectures, symposiums, a film exhibition, workshops and other events that will focus on the latest research in the field of animal behavior.

Keynote speaker Ken Dial of the University of Montana will discuss “The Evolution of Biomechanics of Bird Flight.” Peter Narins, a professor at UCLA, will present “The Adventures of an Expeditionary Biologist.” Richard Alexander of the University of Michigan will present the society’s Distinguished Animal Behaviorist lecture, “Trying to be scientific with an N of one: More behavioral biologists should investigate the human species.”

Films to be screened include “Land of the Anaconda” about the largest snake in the world, “Desert Pronghorns: Sentinels of Time,” about efforts to save and restore the Peninsular Pronghorns of Baja, Mexico, “Learning to Sea” about coral reefs, and others.

The conference is open to the public. For more information or to register, go to http://www.boisestate.edu/biology/ and click on Animal Behavior Society. Conference fee is $285.

University professors and researchers, zoo personnel and students and others are among those registered for the conference, said Jim Belthoff, a Boise State University biology professor and conference chair. “Boise is a great location for this conference, and we’re looking forward to an outstanding event,” he said.

The Animal Behavior Society is a non-profit scientific society founded to promote the study of animal behavior. ABS members are from all over the world, but primarily from countries in the Western Hemisphere. Membership is open to those interested in the study of animal behavior.
