Guest artist Tamsie Ringler, a
sculptor and faculty member at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., will
give a slide lecture on public art at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Room 255 of
the Liberal Arts Building. The lecture is free and open to the community.
Ringler is in Boise to present an iron-pouring workshop. The workshop runs from
9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Aug. 11-16 in Room 152 and the surrounding sculpture corner of
the Liberal Arts Building. Members of the public are welcome to stop in any time
to see this interesting process. Of special interest will we the actual pouring
of the iron into molds, which will occur all day on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Ringler received a commission in 2001 for the Tri-Met Public Art Program and
designed a sculptural installation titled Living Room for a public park in
Gresham. Living Room consists of a cast bronze television with a bronze coffee
table, placed in front of a cast concrete couch and armchair, all molded
directly from real objects. The television also glows with an inner light
through a colored glass screen. A large circular mosaic concrete rug
incorporates inset panels depicting aspects of life in and around Gresham.
The private nature of a living room brings a feeling of intimacy and
transformation to a public space, Ringler said, noting that park-goers and
commuters regularly relax on the furniture.
The public is also invited to
view sculpture work in progress through Aug. 16
