Boise State Theatre Arts Opens Season Oct. 2 With Beckett's 'EndGame'

Boise State Universitys theater arts department opens its 2003-04 season with Samuel Becketts absurdist play Endgame. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2-4 and 8-11 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 and 12 at the Morrison Center Stage II. Tickets are $9 general and $7 for students and seniors at Select-a-Seat. Boise State students, faculty and staff can receive free tickets at campus box offices.

Other productions in the season include Noel Cowards Present Laughter Nov. 13-16 and 19-23; and Henrik Ibsens Hedda Gabler March 10-14 and 17-21. In addition, the Theatre Majors Association will present a fall showcase Dec. 3-6 and dance students will present a fall dance concert Dec. 12 and 13. Both groups will also hold performances in the spring.

One of the most highly respected examples of Theatre of the Absurd, Endgame is named for the final stage of a chess game where the outcome is already known. Beckett, an avid chess fan, saw a parallel between the chess endgame and the final stages of life.

Set in a time and place somewhere on the brink of oblivion, the play revolves around four people. Two live in trash cans, another cant sit down or leave and the fourth is blind and confined to a wheelchair. Death seems imminent, the world outside post-apocalyptic, yet lifes farcical nature takes up much of the chatter.

The play is directed by Anne Hoste, a theatre arts professor who is also Boise States resident costume designer. Adam Harrell plays the role of Hamm, Luke Masengill plays Clov, Nick Stewart Sceirine plays Nagg and Bethany Adams plays the role of Nell. Endgame also features the work of student costume designer Robert Mulcock and student lighting designer Matt Curtis.
