Reception to Welcome New Art Faculty

The community is invite to join the Boise State University art department in welcoming new faculty members at a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Foothills Training Room at Boise City Hall, 150 N. Capitol Blvd. Each new faculty member will present a brief introduction to his or her work, followed by an informal reception.

Tudor Mitroi — Painting and Drawing: “As a Romanian, I was born and spent most of my life in a culture between East and West. Educated in Bucharest in the European tradition, I also came into close contact with the traditional art of my native country. In the United States I have tried to define my identity in the contemporary dialogue. It is the tension between these different worlds that I try to explore in my own artwork.” Mitroi attended the prestigious Art Academy in Bucharest and received his MFA at the University of North Texas.

Kimiko Miyoshi — Printmaking: “I admire the physicist who spends a great amount of time proving mathematically that one would make exactly the same amount of noise unwrapping a candy bar in a darkened theater whether one does it slow or fast.” Miyoshi received a BFA from the University of California, Long Beach and an MFA from the University of New Mexico.

Anika Smulovitz — Art Metals: “My background as a jeweler has led me to explore lips in the context of the interrelationship between body, adornment and issue of intimacy … These pieces are photographs, small interactive sculptures, installations, brooches and a new form of adornment.” Smulovitz received a BFA from the University of Oregon and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Nicholas Newman — Art History/Visual Culture/Critical Theory:  “In the classroom Nick combines rigor with humor and his approach intertwines a wide range of current critical methodologies with formal analysis of the individual works of art.” Newman received a B.A. in philosophy from Dartmouth College, an M.A. from Binghamton University and is currently completing his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester.

Kathleen Keys — Gallery Director: “As an artist-educator-administrator-researcher, I strongly believe in the catalytic power of the arts to encourage community building, critical thinking, empowerment and positive social change.” Keys received a Ph.D. in art education and an M.A. in arts policy & administration from Ohio State University, and a B.A. in arts administration and a BFA in painting from the University of Kentucky.
