In
anticipation of their appearance with the College of Southern

prepared a one-hour radio special, featuring the Deidre Rodman
Quintet. “The Deidre Rodman Quintet Special” will be heard at 3
p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 and at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7.
The Deidre Rodman Quintet Special is hosted and produced by
national jazz radio host Jeff Fox. Fox is also the chair of the
English department at the College of Southern Idaho. He is the
morning host from 8a.m.-noon weekdays on Idaho’s Jazz Station. Fox
is joined on the program by event spokesperson Brent Jensen.
The College of Southern Idaho jazz program will introduce its new
CSI Jazz Summit Seminar series with a performance by the Deidre
Rodman Quintet on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 in the O'Leary Junior
High School Auditorium. A jazz master class will be presented at 3
p.m. followed by an evening concert at 8 p.m. Both events are open
to the public free of charge. Donations to the CSI jazz program
and the O'Leary Junior High band program will be gladly accepted
at the door. For additional information about this event contact
Jensen at (208) 732-6765 or
bjensen@csi.edu.
An Idaho native, 32-year-old pianist/composer Deidre Rodman moved
to New
York in 1997 after receiving a master's degree in jazz studies
from the University of North Texas. Her quintet, which includes
Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone, Russ Johnson on trumpet, Bob Bowen
on bass and Mark Ferber on drums, released its first recording on
Sunnyside in August 2001 (Sun Is Us) to enthusiastic reviews, and
was followed by a successful tour. On Rodman's new release, Simple
Stories, the quintet is joined by vocalist Luciana Souza and The
Neighborhood School Children's Choir, with the composer's vocals
and melodies rounding out the mix.
Rodman's other musical activities include recording and touring
with Roy Nathanson and the Jazz Passengers and directing/arranging
Darius de Haas' Lincoln Center premiere of So This is Love:
Variations on Strayhorn and its follow-up recording (Daydream)
which was awarded the 2002 Bistro Award for Recording of the Year.
She has also worked with Deborah Harry on the soundtrack for Pie
in the Sky: The Brigid Berlin Story, a Venice Film Festival entry.
Rodman has also appeared on the Conan O'Brien Show and Live with
Regis & Kelly with Elvis Costello, who deemed her "a wonderful
pianist and delicate composer with a truly unique voice."
The CSI Jazz Summit Seminars are an ongoing series of jazz
workshops and concerts that will be presented periodically
throughout the academic year. The series, under the guidance of
CSI jazz studies director Jensen, will bring high caliber jazz
musicians and educators to the Magic Valley area for master
classes and concert presentations.
The Deidre Rodman Quintet's 2003 Tour will conclude Monday, Oct.
20 at the Jazz Gallery in New York City. For additional
information on Rodman and her music, please visit her Web site at
