Boise State Seeks Volunteers For Adult Tutoring Programs

Boise State University’s Canyon County Center in Nampa is looking for volunteers to help adults with their English.

Opportunities are available in the adult literacy program or in the English as a Second Language program.

In the adult literacy program, volunteers commit to work with a student once or twice a week at a mutually convenient time. Some of the students don’t read at all, or read at such a basic level that one-on-one help from a volunteer is the only way for them to progress. Orientation and mentoring are provided to the tutor by Carmen Swan, program coordinator. For more information on this program, call Swan at 426-4713.

Many of the students in the ESL program are new to the United States and need help with their new language. Helping these students requires no knowledge of a foreign language or prior experience tutoring. Many students just need someone with whom to carry on simple conversations. Others need help with their ESL class work or with particular needs such as pronunciation, reading, writing or grammar.

ESL volunteers will be oriented and mentored by ESL instructor Janet McCornack at the Nampa campus, 2407 Caldwell Blvd. For more information about the ESL program, call 426-4714.
