State University has a full slate of events planned to commemorate
Alcohol Awareness Week, beginning with a pre-week Sobriety Pledge
campaign. Students and community members are encouraged to pledge
to abstain from alcohol for one week and wear the pledge armband.
Sign-up will be in the Student Union from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct.
14-16. Statistics show that 1,400
college students ages 18-24 die each year from alcohol-related
injuries, and more than 150,000 students develop alcohol-related
health problems. An astonishing 2.1 million students reported
driving under the influence of alcohol last year and 11 percent of
students in this age group report that they have damaged property
while under the influence of alcohol.
Alcohol Awareness Week seeks to help people
understand the risks involved with irresponsible drinking and to
encourage other forms of entertainment. Events include:
Oct. 20 � Film, �28 Days,� starring Sandra Bullock and rated
PG-13. 7 p.m. in the Special Events Center. Free, popcorn and soda
available for $1.50.
Oct. 20-23 � Happy Hour at the Recreation Center. Learn the
facts about alcohol and enjoy a complimentary sport drink. 4-6
p.m.
Oct. 21 � Boise State volleyball vs. University of Idaho. 7
p.m. in Bronco Gym.
Oct. 22 � Alcohol screenings to assess personal use of alcohol.
Noon-1 p.m. at the Student Union marketing booth.
Oct. 24 � Game Center all-nighter. Enjoy
free pizza and free bowling, billiards and video games. Boise
State students only, one guest admitted per student with ID.
Midnight-3 a.m.
Oct. 25 � Early Bird Breakfast at Shari�s, 2710 W. Boise Ave.
After the all-nighter, enjoy breakfast off the Sunshine Menu for
only $5, plus get a free drink. 3-5 a.m.
Oct. 25 � Tailgate before the Broncos vs. San Jose State
football game. Free food, DJ, raffle and games, plus the first 25
students to bring their punch card will receive a Nalgene water
bottle. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. behind the Applied Technology Building.
Kick-off time is 1:05 p.m.
Oct. 27 � Trendy Drugs presentation. Learn about the effects of
GHB, Liquid X, Ecstasy, Special K, LSD, Nitrous Oxide and other
drugs on the body, mind and relationships. 3:30-5 p.m. at the
Special Events Center.
Students who participate in all events are eligible to enter a
drawing to win a Nintendo Game Cube. Alcohol Awareness Week events
are sponsored by Boise State Health, Wellness and Counseling
Services, Student Housing, Women�s Center, Campus Recreation and
the Student Union.
