| The Idaho State Board of
Education has approved the establishment of a Center of Excellence
for Environmental Health and Safety (CEEHS) at Boise State
University. The mission of the new Center will be to enhance
public health and safety through technical assistance,
consultation and educational outreach. CEEHS will be housed in the
College of Health Sciences and immediate administrative support
will be provided by the Center for Health Policy.
The new Center will provide practical information to help
protect public health and safety and will provide assistance in
promoting environmental quality. Collaboration with other Idaho
academic institutions, state and federal agencies, consultants and
industry will allow the Center to achieve statewide impact. The
Center will also provide innovative teaching and service
opportunities for faculty and students across a broad range of
academic disciplines.
Among the first services to be provided by the Center will be
professional training programs for employees and consultants who
work with hazardous materials. Future activities will also
include: providing programs designed to increase homeland security
through grassroots, citizen-focused education; assisting regional
communities, planners, governmental agencies and business leaders
in becoming knowledgeable about important public health issues;
serving as a clearinghouse for environmental health and safety
information; and providing statewide leadership related to
environmental education.
For ongoing operations and growth, CEEHS will rely on funding
support from private sources, program fees, training grants and
university/industry partnerships. For more information about the
new Center of Excellence for Environmental Health and Safety, call
