Patent For Low-Power Transistor Issued To Boise State

A design for a transistor that could dramatically reduce power requirements in a wide range of electronic applications, including wireless communication devices, was awarded a U.S. patent on June 17, 2003. Boise State University electrical engineering professor Stephen A. Parke is the transistor’s inventor and Boise State is the patent holder.

The transistor is characterized by a “Damascene” double gate, which is named after the ancient Middle Eastern art from Damascus where fine grooves are etched into stone and inlaid with gold or other precious metals. In the transistor design, metal is inlaid into etched grooves in the semiconductor wafer.
