Art and English
Departments Present MFA Dual Showcase: Art and Creative Writing
Boise State University will present three art and literary
events Oct. 17 and 18, sponsored by the art and English
departments master of fine arts programs.
Time Confinement in Rebellion, a master of fine arts
thesis exhibition and installation by May Hariri Aboutaam, will
open with a free reception from 6:30-9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, in
the Liberal Arts Building (Gallery 1). The exhibition runs
through Nov. 7.
Born in Beirut, Aboutaam earned her BFA from Faculte des Beaux
Arts in Lebanon. Time Confinement in Rebellion
structurally analyzes a political hierarchy that plays a role in
the human process of creativity, destruction and the
construction of identity. Her installation work involves time
within colonial space, post-colonial space, and the engagement
of a critical portrayal of the representation of the third world
as other. Her experiences as a third world citizen are
contextualized by living in a state of in-betweeness in
the post- Sept. 11 West.
Coinciding with this event, Writers Reading in the
Gallery, a program of fiction and poetry readings from recent
creative writing MFA graduates, will be presented from 5:30-7
p.m. the same evening, Friday, Oct. 17, in the Hemingway Center
for Western Studies (Gallery 2). Both events are free and open
to the public. Free parking will be available in the Liberal
Arts parking lot.
In partnership with a featured exhibition of his work at the R.
Grey Jewelry Gallery, Thomas Mann, internationally renowned
metal artist, will give a retrospective slide presentation and
lecture at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in the Student Union
Barnwell Room. Preceding the lecture the artist will sign copies
of his book, "Thomas Mann, Metal Artist," from 10
a.m.-4 p.m. at R. Grey Jewelry Gallery, 818 W. Idaho St., Boise,
(208) 385-9337.
Lloyd Herman, founding director of the Smithsonian
Institutions Renwick Gallery, said, Thomas Mann has been
in the vanguard of American art jewelry design for nearly three
decades. His compositions were among the first to focus not on
the intrinsic value of precious metals and gemstones, but rather
on idea and content.
