America
Seen Through European Eyes to Run on NPR News 91
Beginning
Oct. 14, NPRs Sylvia Poggioli will look at how and why
European perceptions of America have changed so much since
Sept.11, when there had been such an outpouring of solidarity.
The four-part series will air on All Things Considered,
Tuesday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Oct. 17, on NPR News 91.
The series took Poggioli and Producer Jeff Rogers
to Germany and France, countries that opposed the U.S.-led war;
to Italy, which backed the Bush administration despite
widespread public opposition; and to Poland, which fully
supported the U.S. and even sent some troops to the Gulf.
Said Poggioli, Everywhere, politicians and
analysts tried to convince us that there is no
anti-Americanism here,' but in talking to normal people we found
that anti-Americanism is alive and well. And we began to trace
its roots and causes in different European societies.
Among the complex emotions elicited by the U.S.
as the worlds single super power fascination and hatred,
admiration and envy there is also a new emotion: outright
fear. With the Cold War over, Europeans are loosening the bonds
with their onetime military and economic protector, who is now
perceived as unpredictable. As one analyst told me, says
Poggioli, America is out of control.
All Things Considered can be heard on NPR
