Boise State Presents Homeland Security Conference Nov. 20-21

Editors please note: Information previously provided for the media has changed.

The Boise State University Student Programs Board will host a conference on Homeland Security from 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, and Friday, Nov. 21, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Seating begins at 6 p.m. The event will feature speakers covering both sides of the Homeland Security debate. Conference tickets are $5 general, $10 at the door and free for Boise State students, faculty and staff. Free parking will be available at the Visitor and Liberal Arts lots.

Speakers at the conference include Nadine Strossen, Danny Coulson, Boise Police Chief Don Pierce and Boise Fire Battalion Chief Bruce Rankin

Strossen is a professor of law at New York Law School and the current president of the American Civil Liberties Union. She speaks frequently on legal issues in todays media and has published a book titled Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women's Rights (Scribner 1995).

Coulson is the founder and former commander of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hostage Rescue Team and has worked with the FBI for more than 30 years. He has convicted numerous extremists, including Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

The Homeland Security Bill passed Sept. 9, 2002, creating the Department of Homeland Security. This departments purpose is to provide America with a government agency responsible for analyzing and responding to potential future terrorist threats, protecting borders and airports, and

enhancing public services. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security involved the largest government restructuring since the creation of the Department of Defense in the 1940s. The debate stemming from this bill focuses on budgeting for the new department, infringements on privacy and questions of how effective such a department will be. This conference strives to provide answers in the midst of so many unanswered questions concerning the Department of Homeland Security.
