'Realism Now' Artist Presents Lecture And Discussion

Coinciding with “Realism Now: Paintings & Drawings” on display at Boise State University through Nov. 7, visiting and exhibiting artist Wade Schuman will present a slide lecture at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Student Union Hatch A Ballroom. Schuman will discuss his personal evolution as a figurative artist. The event is free and open to the public.

Following the lecture an interactive discussion and walk-through of the “Realism” exhibition will be led by Schuman, art department chairman Richard Young and Dan Scott. A triptych (a three-paneled painting) titled “Passages: Conflict, Rowing Man, and Resolutions” and two additional paintings by Schuman are currently on view in Gallery 2 of the Visual Arts Center, located in the Hemingway Center. Free parking is available for the duration of the exhibition in the Liberal Arts parking lot.

Schuman is a full time professor of art history, painting and drawing, and is the painting curriculum coordinator at the New York Academy of Art. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and traveled extensively in Europe on a Schiedt Travel Grant for Study from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has taught painting and drawing privately for more than 12 years.

His paintings and drawings — exhibited in New York, Chicago, Pennsylvania, Germany and France — have received many awards of distinction, including three Visual Arts Fellowship Grants for Painting from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. He has also received an Award of Excellence from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was a National Endowment for the Arts Mid-Atlantic Regional Fellowship Finalist. His work has been reproduced or written about in many publications including the New York Times, the New Yorker, Art in America, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Sciences magazine. He is represented by the Forum Gallery in New York City and the More Gallery in Philadelphia.
