Boise State Invites
Students To Enter MLK Essay Contest

Treasure Valley students
are encouraged to participate in the 12th annual Martin Luther
King, Jr./Idaho Human Rights Celebration children’s essay
contest, sponsored by Boise State University Student Activities.
This year’s theme is “How Can I Make a Difference Today,
Tomorrow and Forever?”
The contest is open to any student in third through fifth
grades. Essays may be written in English or Spanish and must be
250 words or less. Children will compete for six $50 cash awards
— three for English-language essays and three for
Spanish-language essays.
Each entry should include the child’s name, the name of
a parent or guardian, names of the child’s teacher and school,
the child’s grade level, home telephone number and home
address. Children may submit their own essays or teachers may
collect students’ essays and mail them together. Mail entries
to Boise State University Student Activities, Martin Luther
King, Jr. Essay Contest,1910 University Drive, Boise, ID 83725-1335.
All entries must be received by Jan. 5, 2004.
Teachers who use this activity as a class project are encouraged
to submit their students’ entries before the holiday break.
Essays will be judged on the following criteria:
1. Did the essay answer the question?
2. Does the writer clearly explain his or her personal response
to the issue of human rights?
3. Does the writer show an understanding of the principles
Martin Luther King, Jr. taught?
4. Does the writer show compassion and understanding for other
races?
5. What feeling does this student’s writing evoke in me (the
reader)?
