'Coming Home' Radio Special From The Library Of Congress

US Senator Mike Crapo to appear on local program on NPR News 91

NPR News 91 Program Director Jim East has announced a radio special, Coming Home, to be aired from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, along with a locally produced segment, Coming Home to Idaho, from 8:30-9 p.m. In the local program, Boise State Radio general manager Jim Paluzzi will feature special reports and interviews with Idaho veterans and U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, talking about the importance of preserving the stories of Idahoans who have served their country.

There are 19 million war veterans living in the United States today, but every day 1,500 of them pass away. Motivated by a desire to honor our nation’s war veterans for their service and to collect their stories and experiences while they are still among us, the U.S. Congress created the Veterans History Project.

The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress is working to collect and preserve audio and video-taped oral histories, along with documentary materials such as letters, diaries, maps, photographs and home movies of America’s war veterans and those who served in support of them.

The Veterans History Project covers World Wars I and II, and the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. It includes all participants in those wars — men and women, civilian and military. It documents the contributions of civilian volunteers, support staff and war industry workers, as well as the experiences of military personnel from all ranks and branches of service.

Knowing that present and future generations of Americans have much to learn from those who served, Sen. Crapo has asked Boise State Radio to work with his office to develop programming that addresses veterans issues and details their stories.

NPR News 91 is heard at 91.5 FM, KBSX Boise; 88.5 FM, KBSY Burley; 91.3 FM, KBSJ Jackpot; and 91.1 FM, KBSK McCall. Boise State Radio includes NPR News 91, KBSU-arts & cultural programming and Idaho’s Jazz Station. http://radio.boisestate.edu.
