St. Petersburg String
Quartet Celebrates Russian Music In Boise

The
Boise Chamber Music Society and the Boise State University music
department present the St. Petersburg String Quartet for
the second concert of the Boise Chamber Music Series, at 8 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 5, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Celebrating
the 300th anniversary of their hometown, St. Petersburg, Russia,
the Quartet will play a passionate program of Prokofiev and
Glazunov, and share a hauntingly beautiful new work by Georgian
composer Zurab Nadarejshvili.
Early in its career, the Quartet blazed a trail through
international chamber music competitions, winning First Prize at
the All-Soviet Union String Quartet Competition; the Silver Medal
and a Special Prize at the Tokyo International Competition of
Chamber Ensembles; First Prize and both Special Prizes at the
Vittorio Gui International Competition for Chamber Ensembles in
Florence, Italy; and First Prize and the Grand Prix Musica Viva at
the International Competition for Chamber Ensembles in Melbourne,
Australia.
The Quartet will soon release the complete works of Tchaikovsky
for string quartet on the Dorian label. Already available are the
complete Shostakovich cycle on Hyperion, and Delos’ recordings of
Prokofiev’s two quartets, Nadarejshvili’s “String Quartet no.1,”
and Glazunov’s “Quartet No. 5.” Tickets for this concert are $20
general and $15 for students and seniors. For tickets or
additional information, call Jeanne Belfy at 426-1216.
The Quartet will also present A Little Morning Music,
a master class with student string quartets, at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. This event,
free and open to the public, is supported by the Boise Chamber
Music Society and the Boise State music department.
