Boise State Speech Team Talks Way To Second Place Finish

The Boise State debate and speech team finished second at the Pacific University tournament in Forest Grove, Ore., Oct. 24-26. From a field of 25 colleges and universities from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and California, the Talkin’ Broncos won 20 awards in nine of the tournament’s 11 speech events and added awards in debate.

Five upperclassmen accounted for the bulk of Boise State’s scoring. Team captain Lacey Rammell-O’Brien (junior, Boise) led the way, finishing second in Rhetorical Analysis, Prose Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation, and adding a fifth-place award in Impromptu Speaking. Katherine Pate (senior, Ketchum) placed second in Informative Speaking, third in Dramatic Interpretation and fourth in Prose Interpretation. Annah Merkley (junior, Pocatello) was third in both Informative Speaking and Program Oral Interpretation. Hannah Bankhead (senior, Cambridge) finished second in Impromptu Speaking and fifth in Persuasive Speaking. Nate Schunke (junior, Boise) placed third in Persuasive Speaking and fourth in Impromptu. Chace Mickelson (freshman, Pocatello) added a fifth-place award in Informative Speaking and a sixth-place finish in Persuasive Speaking.

The remaining speech awards were won by Hillary Davidson (sophomore, Spokane), second in Informative Speaking; Cindy Estey (senior, Boise), third in Persuasive Speaking; Barton Jackson (freshman, Eagle), third in Speech to Entertain; Rachel Webb (senior, Twin Falls) second in Informative Speaking; and Melody Moehlmann (senior, Boise), sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Both of Boise State’s novice debate teams received awards. Sheila Dalley (freshman, Boise) and Moehlmann placed fifth and Estey & Pate finished third in Novice Parliamentary Debate. In addition, Jackson, Schunke and Moehlmann were named to the All-Tournament Debate Team.

The Talkin’ Broncos were runners-up to Carroll College of Helena, Mont. Humboldt State (Calif.) was third, Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) was fourth and Albertson College of Idaho finished fifth. The Boise State team travels to the Linfield College Tournament in McMinnville, Ore. next week.
