Professor Honored For Literacy Research

Jeff
Wilhelm, an associate professor of English at Boise State
University, has been named to receive the prestigious David H.
Russell Research Award for his book Reading Don't Fix No Chevys:
Literacy in the Lives of Young Men. He will receive the award
Nov. 22 at the national conference of the National Council of
Teachers of English (NCTE), the national professional organization
of English Teachers.Reading Don’t
Fix No Chevys, co-written with Michael W. Smith of Rutgers
University, looks at the reading habits of young men and how to
promote it.
Wilhelm was also recognized by the NCTE’s Australian
counterpart, the Australian Association for the Teaching of
English and by the Australian Literacy Educators Association. Both
groups hailed Wilhelm's work on a CD-ROM for teachers titled My
Read: Strategies for Reading in the Middle Years. The groups
awarded Wilhelm the Award for Excellence in Educational
Publishing.
Wilhelm, who teaches English education, recently joined Boise
State’s English department.
