Boise TubaChristmas To Bring Holiday Cheer To Downtown Capitol

More than 60 tuba and baritone players, known collectively as Boise TubaChristmas, will once again serenade downtown Boise with traditional Christmas carols on Saturday, Dec. 6. The group will perform at 3:30 p.m. at the Centre on The Grove (weather permitting) and at 4:30 p.m. at the Capitol Rotunda. Both performances are free and open to the public.

This unique ensemble is under the direction of David Mathie, professor of low brass at Boise State University and a trombonist with the Boise Philharmonic, and Michael Fischer, professor of tuba at Boise State and a tubist with the Boise Philharmonic.

Ensemble members include tuba players from Boise State and local high schools, local band directors and community members.

Now in its 12th year, TubaChristmas is a Boise tradition. In past years TubaChristmas has been featured on Boise television stations as well as in local newspapers and is eagerly anticipated by many in the community. The event has been a fixture in many larger cities in this country since the first performance in New York City in 1974. Boise is one of only two cities in Idaho that observe the tradition.

Music for TubaChristmas was arranged by noted American composer Alec Wilder and includes such carols as Deck the Halls, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Silver Bells, O Come All Ye Faithful and Silent Night. The ensemble will play more than 20 carols in half-hour sessions at each site.
