Boise State Design Students Erect Public Sculpture Based On Diversity

Boise State University art students enrolled in the fall 2003 basic design class will erect a wood sculpture on campus Thursday, Dec. 11. The sculpture will remain in place until Dec. 18 as part of a class assignment to create a temporary outdoor, site-specific piece of art that is able to sustain the climate of the campus for at least a week. Students chose a design by classmate Alan Estes titled “BSU Diversity?” from 13 designs proposed by class members. The sculpture will be installed between the Student Union Building and the Appleton Tennis Complex.

Estes’ design consists of 50 two-by-fours that have been cut, sanded and painted different sizes, shapes and colors. A tower of intermingling light and dark boards, with more light than dark boards, will be constructed as a representation of the student demographics on the Boise State campus.

When asked what the piece is meant to relay to the student population at Boise State, Estes replied, “It represents demographics. Other than that I don’t want to impose any thoughts on anyone I just want people to see it and hopefully take what they get from it in a positive direction.”

The project will be constructed under the direction of art instructor Kirsten Furlong. Students contributing to the fabrication of the piece include Sary Anderson, Beth Bricker, Jen Doherty, Jon Ekburg, Alan Estes, Nicole Gerrard, Lynn Hezeltine, Kailyn Lamb, Michael La Rocco, Kristen Mance, Cora McCarthy, Krista Monroe and Peggy Pittman.
