Three
Boise State University students have been awarded $5,000
scholarships to study abroad for spring semester 2004.
Lisa Burns has received a $5,000 Benjamin A.
Gilman award. She is sophomore political science major and will
study in Heredia, Costa Rica, with the University Studies Abroad
Consortium (USAC).
This award is funded by the U.S. Department
of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The award
allows students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad.
Stephanie Hiller (sophomore) and Yasmine
Romero (junior), both linguistics majors, were each awarded the
$5,000 Freeman-Asia Scholarship to study at Waseda University in
Tokyo, Japan. They are the first Boise State students to receive
the scholarship.
The primary goal of the privately funded
Freeman-Asia Program is to increase the number of American
undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing
students with the information and financial assistance they need.
Awardees are expected to share their experiences with their home
campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread
understanding of Asia in their home communities.
Boise State offers a wide variety of choices
for students to study abroad. Students remain enrolled at Boise
State, receive Boise State credit for courses taken abroad (with
pre-departure planning and course approvals), and can apply their
financial aid awards to the cost of their program. Programs are
designed to meet a broad range of academic majors, interests and
levels of affordability. Scholarship funding is available. Call
