Student Organizers Of
Health Fair Receive Golden Gull Award

|
Students who have organized health fairs for the past seven years
at Boise State University have received the Golden Gull Award from
the Pacific Coast College Health Association (PCCHA). Students in
the upper division and graduate level health promotion class
taught by Boise State kinesiology professor Caile Spear have
organized health fairs for the campus and community, with a
different theme each year. This years’ fair, themed “revolutionary
education for families,” was held Nov. 19 and featured more than
30 educational booths on topics from smoking cessation to
exercise, vision and hearing screenings, flu shots, bone density
testing and other services. PCCHA is a
region of the American College Health Association, the principal
advocacy and leadership organization for health professionals at
colleges and universities that includes more than 900 institutions
of higher education. The Golden Gull Award was established in 2001
to recognize exemplary, innovative and inspirational practices in
college health.
The REACH (Recreation, Education and
Awareness Through Community Health) fair is planned, implemented
and evaluated by students as a service-learning project. Several
past students have said their current employers hired them in part
due to the leadership, organizational and planning skills they
acquired while organizing the health fair.
