Pacific Islander Activist
To Speak At Boise State

|
Community
leader and activist Amata Coleman Radewagen will speak at Boise
State University at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Student Union
Hatch Ballroom. Sponsored by the Hui-O-Aloha club, Radewagen’s
talk, titled “What as Asian/Pacific Islanders can you do to shape
the future?” is free and open to the public. Contact the Boise
State Cultural Center at 426-4259 for more information.
Radewagen chairs the 15-member President’s Advisory Commission
on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. She is the only Pacific
Islander on the committee that advises President George W. Bush on
Asian American and Pacific Islander issues.
A community activist and political leader in American Samoa,
she was named National Breast Cancer Coalition coordinator for the
territory in 1993 and from 1994 to 1997 was Pacific Region
coordinator as well. A breast cancer survivor, Radewagen also has
served as spokesperson for the Samoan Women’s Health Fund, a
project aimed at breast cancer awareness and a screening program
in the territory, and helped to bring mammography to Pago Pago for
the first time.
Radewagen also serves as a leadership staffer in the U.S.
House of Representatives. She is the special projects coordinator
and oversees the Outreach Job Bank for Congresswoman Deborah
Pryce.
