Women's Center Offers Relationship Rights Workshop Series

The Women’s Center at Boise State University will present “Relationship Rights” in January and February. The series of free workshops will feature local experts who will address divorce, child custody, separation and child support issues.

There is an abundance of misinformation surrounding these issues, Women’s Center Coordinator Melissa Wintrow said. The workshops are designed to give proper information and answer common questions that may arise. A printed resource book will be available for pre-registered participants to take with them that will include lists of commonly asked questions and legal resources.

All workshops will be held in the Farnsworth Room in the Student Union. Workshop topics and dates are as follows:

- The Law Speaks Up, 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26. Former Idaho Supreme Court Justice Cathy R. Silak will moderate. A panel of attorneys will address the legal aspects of divorce, custody, separation and child support, along with legal processes, rights and logistics involved in the state’s standard procedures. Discussions will include gray areas in the law and the legal process. Participating attorneys are members of Idaho Women Lawyers Inc.

- Managing Conflict — When the Little Ones Count, 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3. Professional mediators will answer questions surrounding the state requirements on parenting classes, child custody mediation, why mediation is important and child support issues.

- Relationship Resourcefulness, 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9. Panel members from a variety of community organizations will provide information about support services available for those struggling with divorce, custody and separation issues. Participating experts include members of Family Court Services for the Fourth Judicial District, Boise Women’s and Children’s Alliance, Idaho Legal Aid Services and the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program.

- Resolving Problems in Relationships, 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. This workshop is designed for those who don’t see divorce as an option, but recognize that they are struggling. The panel will include counselors from Boise State and professionals from the community who are trained in helping families and couples resolve conflicts.
Co-sponsors for Relationship Rights include the Boise State Students of Conflict Management Services.
